This pattern is also called Past Tense (Nominal) and used to declare a state that already past. Adverbs of this pattern usually use just now, this morning, two weeks ago, etc.

SHORT CONVERSATIONS:

A        : Why were you not at home last night, Jes?
B        : I was at the cinema, Dad. Were you at home?
A        : No, I wasn’t. I was at the cinema, too.

A        : What time was the class over yesterday?
B        : It was over at twelve pm.

A        : When was the construction of the building complete?
B        : It was complete two months ago.

A        : Who were the best actor and actress last year?
B        : My sister and I were.
A        : Are you kidding?

A        : Was yesterday examination difficult?
B        : I don’t know.
A        : Why?
B        : Because I was absent.

WHERE WERE YOU LAST NIGHT?

Rani   : Were you at home last night, Ros?
Rossy : No, I wasn’t. I was at Andi’s house.
Rani   : Why were you there?
Rossy : We studied together.
Rani   : Was Josh there too?
Rossy : No, he wasn’t. He went to a cinema with his friend.
Rani   : How is Andi’s mother?
Rossy : She was still sick yesterday afternoon. But she is well now.
Rani   : Thanks God.
Rossy : How about you,Ran? Were you at home last night?
Rani   : Yes, I was.
Rossy : Who were at your home?
Rani   : My family and I were. We celebrated my brother’s brithday.
