This pattern
is also called Past Continuous Tense
(Verbal) and used to explain continuous
activities in past. Meaning of this sentense will be clear if it’s followed by
past sentence (2, 5). “When”
conjunction is often used in this pattern.
SHORT CONVERSATIONS:
A : Who was crying when I came to your house yesterday?
B : My little sister was.
A : Was
she having a quarrel with your
brother?
B : Yes, she was.
A : I am not sure with the test result.
B : Why? Didn’t you study last night?
A : I was
studying when the light suddenly extinguished.
A : Was
Rani sleeping when I came to her

B : No, she wasn’t.
A : What was she doing?
B : She was watching TV with me.
A : What were the people doing
when tsunami and earthquake happened?
B : Some were swimming in the sea and others were talking with their families.
A : Sorry, I was sleeping when you called me last night.
B : No problem. I was studying with your sister when you called me back.

Lia : I called you last night, but there was
no answer. Were were you?
Juli : I was at home.
Lia : Were
you sleeping?
Juli : No, I was watching TV when you called me.
Lia : Why didn’t you pick up the phone?
Juli : The telephone was in the kitchen. And
my mother was there.
Lia : Why didn’t she pick up the telephone,
either?
Juli : Perhaps she was in the bathroom.
