This pattern is called Past Tense (Verbal) and used to explain a state that already past. 

SHORT CONVERSATIONS:

A     : It rained heavily yesterday. Did you stay at home?

B     : I played football with my friends in the yard.

A     : Did you mother schold you?

B     : Of course, she did.

A     : Where did she buy necklaces, rings, and earings?

B     : She bought them at the department store.

A     : Who did she go with?

B     : She went with me.

A     : What did she say to you just now?

B     : She wanted to leave you forever.

A     : Some students didn’t pass the examination last year.

B     : It happens every year. Did you pass the examination?

A     : No, I didn’t.

A     : What happened to you?

B     : I failed at English exam.

A     : Don’t worry. I failed, too.

A BIRTHDAY PARTY

Maya   : Where did you go last night, Dan?

Dany   : I went to Denis.

Maya   : Was there a special party there?

Dany   : Yes, Denis celebrated his birthday.

Maya   : Why didn’t he invite me?

Dany   : Maybe he forgot.

Maya   : How did you go there?

Dany   : By car.

Maya   : Who did you go with?

Dany   : I went there with my classmates.

Maya   : What time did the party begin?

Dany   : It began at around 8 pm.

Maya   : How was the party?

Dany   : It was very fantastic. It took place in the garden. Many people attended to the party.

Maya  : Did you bring a gift with you?

Dany   : Of course, I did.

Maya  : What was it?

Dany   : It was a book.

Maya  : A book? What for?

Dany   : I wanted him to write his impression about the party.

Maya  : How “clever” you are. You ate much and you just gave him a book.

Dany   : Don’t worry. I didn’t write and sign my name on the book. I just wrote “from your special friend”.

Maya  : By the way, what did you do there?

Dany   : We sang, danced and ate together.

Maya  : What time was the party over?

Dany   : Around eleven pm.

Maya  : Did you go home afterwards?

Dany   : No, as a good friend I helped him.

Maya  : What did you do?

Dany   : I helped him “clean” drinks and foods that were still available.
