MUCH – MANY

1.      Much dan many artinya banyak. Much digunakan di depan benda yang tidak bisa dihitung (uncountable noun) dan lebih mengacu kepada banyaknya benda. Sedangkan many digunakan di depan bentuk jamak (plural noun) benda yang bisa dihitung (countable noun) dan mengacu pada jumlah.

Much coffee	Many employees
Much cheese	Many houses
Much water	Many cars

2.    Much dan many digunakan dalam kalimat tanya (interrogative sentence) dan kalimat menyangkal (negative sentence).

Ø  I don’t have much money today.

Ø  Do you have much money today?

Ø  She doesn’t has many friends here.

Ø  Does she has many friends here?

Ø  He doesn’t has many English novels.

Ø  Does he has many English novels?

Ø  There isn’t much water in that room.

Ø  Is there much water in that room?

3.      Dalam kalimat positif (positive sentence) digunakan a lot (of), lots (of) atau plenty of. Ketiga determiner ini bisa diikuti kata benda yang tidak bisa dihitung (uncountable noun) atau bentuk jamak (plural form) benda yang bisa dihitung (countable noun). A great deal of dan a large number of diikuti benda yang tidak bisa dihitung.

Positive Sentence

Ø  She needs lots of sugar to make some cake.

Ø  There are a plenty of books here.

Ø  We need a great deal food for our people.

Ø  We still import a large number of rice.

4.      Much juga digunakan:

a.     Untuk menunjukan suatu pernyataan tidak resmi.

Much money is spent on weapons.

b.     Dengan as....as.

You may take as much as you want to.

c.      Not much bisa digunakan untuk memulai suatu kalimat.

Not much happened in this city after ten years.

5.      Many juga digunakan:

a.     Untuk menunjukan suatu pernyataan tidak resmi.

Many employees have to quit their job this year.

Many people will attend the celebration.

Many employees won’t come to work tomorrow.

b.     Dengan as....as.

He may take as many as he likes.

c.      Not many bisa digunakan untuk memulai kalimat.

Not many will attend the party.
