This pattern is used to declare the existence of a noun. This pattern can be used to declare in the present (2, 3, 4, 5) or in the future (1). To declare the future situation is often also used  THERE + WILL + BE + C pattern, such as There will be a seminar tomorrow. There is is followed by singular noun (1) or uncountable nouns (2, 5). There are is followed by plural noun (2, 3). In front of the noun is sometimes added Noun Determiners which shows the quality of noun which consists of Determiners for countable nouns, such as: a lot of, many, some, several, few and Determiners for uncountable nouns, such as: a lot of, much, some, little. Some in negative sentence and question sentence is usually changed by any.

B          : There are a driving licence, ID, name card, and some money.

A          : How many students are there in your class?

B          : There are twenty male students and fifteen female students.

A          : Is there an examination today?

B          : No, there isn’t.

A          : How many relief workers are there in Aceh and North Sumatra?

B          : There are around 400.

A          : Is there a massage for me?

B          : Yes, there is. From the head master.

LIVING AT THE BOARDING HOUSE

Icca     : Do you live with your parents?

Fitri      : No, I live at the boarding house.

Icca     : How many people are there at the boarding house?

Fitri      : There are ten people.

Icca     : Are they all univercity students?

Fitri      : No, there are five students, two teachers, and three civil servants.

Icca     : What facilities are there?

Fitri      : There are a meeting room and a swimming pool.

Icca     : Is there a regulation?

Fitri      : Yes, There is. All inhabitans must come back before ten pm.

Icca     : How about the guest regulation?

Fitri      : Visiting hours is until nine pm, expect Saturday evening.

Icca     : Are there certain activities among the inhabitans?

Fitri      : Yes. We usually discuss about certain topics every two weeks. And sometimes we hold swimming competition.

Icca     : That’s interesting. I am interested to live there.

Fitri      : Just be chance, there are two rooms still available.

Icca     : All right. Let’s go there.
