make the assumption that conflict with reality or fact in the past. Somtimes
modals “could” is used as a sebstitute“would”.
SHORT CONVERSATIONS:
A : You could have done the test if you had
studied last night.
B : You’re right. I watched TV, instead.
A : Where would she has gone if she
hadn’t got accident yesterday?
B : She would has gone to Bali.
A : Did you come to the meeting?
B : No, I didn’t. Actually I would have come if my friends hadn’t asked me to go with them.
A : Did the police manage to arrest the
thief?
B : No, they didn’t. If they had not been late they could have arrested him.
A : What would your mother have done
to you if you had failed on the exams
last year?
B : She would have reprimanded me.
DELAYED SUCCESS
Ruben : You look very sad. What seems to
be the problem?
Adit : I got D at Biology test yesterday.
Ruben : If you had studied you would not
have failed.
Adit : Of course, I did.
Ruben : So what happened?
Adit : I lost my concentration. If it had not been noisy at home I could have studied better.
Ruben : Why?
Adit : My sister invited her friends to celebrate
her birthday.
Ruben : Oh, I see. I failed at the test,
too.
Adit : Really? What seemed to be the reason?
Ruben : I didn’t have a textbook and my
notes were not complete.
Adit : If you had
called me last night I could have
come to your house.
Ruben : And we could have studied together.
Adit : You’re right. But don’t worry, failure is
just delayed success.
Ruben : I think so.
