This pattern
is called Conditional Sentences in Present Unreal Conditional form and used
to make the assumption that conflict with reality or fact in the present. To be
WERE is always used in nominal sentence of Past
Tense. Somtimes modals “could” is used as a sebstitute“would”.
SHORT CONVERSATIONS:
A : What would you do if you were me?
B : I would
leave her.
A : Would
you buy me a car if you were rich?
B : No. I wouldn’t. I would buy a car for myself.
A : We could
go to the beach if today were
holiday.
B : You’re right. Unfortunately we have a
test today.
A : If I were a president I would
punish crime doers heavily.
B : In my opinion, if you were a president the government couldn’t run well.
A : What would you do if you were a child?
B : I would
teach English to my playmates.
IF I WERE RICH
Melanie : Why are you staring at that car?
Azriel : If I were rich, I would buy
that car.
Melanie : If I were you, I would stop
dreaming.
Azriel : In my opinion, dream is something to
achieve.
Melanie : Maybe you’re right.
Azriel : We could buy many things if we had
much money. And we could do many
things if we had power.
Melanie : All right. Now, what would you do if you were a president?
Azriel : I would increase budget for education to 20 %.
Melanie : If I were the minister of education and culture I would unsertake your program.
Azriel : Now, you star dreaming, too.
Melanie : Don’t make fun of me.
Azriel : If the budget were 20 % the education could
run well.
Melanie : And the life of teacher would get better, too.
